A nonresonant ion trap, which allows the creation and containment of variously charged positive ions, has been designed and constructed. The ions are trapped in a potential depression produced by a high current electron flow. A preliminary model of the trap has been constructed and tested, and data showing its operational characteristics are presented. Possible applications of the trap for research in atomic physics are discussed.
