Ergonomic methods are used in two principal ways: (1) to conduct basic ergonomic research that adds to the body of ergonomic knowledge, and (2) to assist in the design and development of products. The former activity is descriptive; the latter predictive. A major goal of design and development is to specify precisely design requirements for a product that does not yet exist. The development of any product goes through a number of steps, its life cycle, to which ergonomics can make substantial contributions. These contributions are derived from the application of a particular set of ergonomic methods and procedures.
