Participants in the first major conference organised by the Business Social Compliance Initiative in Brussels on November 24 were surprised to find the entrance to the Conference picketed by protesters. BSCI is an organisation set up in March 2003 by FTA (Free Trade Association), an association of European retail companies and associations, to establish a European platform in the field of ethical sourcing and to improve the social performance of clothing suppliers in particular. Representatives of the Belgian and Dutch Clean Clothes Campaign, together with partners from India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Turkey and Macedonia however confronted the conference participants in Brussels with slogans such as BSCI = Business Sweatshop Cover-up Initiative.
