This article describes an educational strategy appropriate (or use by faculty teaching nursing history. It points to nurse biography and autobiography as rich resources for developing the student's knowledge of and appreciation for the history of the profession. Methods are suggested whereby faculty can develop a substantial bibliography of sources. The most common assumptions and cautions pertaining to the use of the genres are presented, along with examples from the body of literature. Finally, the authors suggest guidelines for an assignment designed to increase the student's knowledge of nursing history and improve critical analysis skills.
