A fluted-wheel fertilizer distributor was developed for use on a sugarcane planter. Design details are given along with tests results. On average, 6.06 more fertilizer was distributed than expected from laboratory calibration due to the wheels sinking into the soil, thus reducing its effective diameter and increasing the number of revolutions. The aluminium cast fluted wheel could be used in sugarcane planters for precise metering of fertilizers. The mechanism was suitable for areas where urea, diammonium phosphate and muriate of potash KCl are applied in the range 100-150, 155-230 and 160-235 kg/ha, respectively.
