Implemented to serve very specific needs and operated under simple rules, most of the reservoirs built in Quebec are asked to satisfy conflicting constraints which are difficult to marry with the original ones.Navigation was the objective of the first large reservoirs, however, it never appeared as a critical factor in the objective fonction of river regulation. In fact most of the actual large reservoirs have been set in place to meet hydroelectric needs. This picture is now completly transformed, changes in people#x2019;s habits and needs and their preoccupation toward environmental aspects obliged the producers to adjust their operation procedures. A recent study conducted on the Ottawa River demonstrates that the implementation of sophisticated supporting means and new techniques permit to balance different constraints and certain goals in order to make the best use of water resource, when keeping rational operation rules for reservoirs.
