Bertha, the world's largest tunnel boring machine (TBM), broke through into a receiving pit after an arduous, 2.7 km (1.7 mile) journey beneath the city of Seattle, WA. The 17.5-m (57.5-ft) diameter TBM was built by Hitachi Zosen and delivered to Seattle in 2013 to bore a tunnel as part of a multi-billion dollar project for the Washington Department of Transportation (WSDOT) to replace the aging Alaskan Way Viaduct in Seattle.
