In response to a growing need for protection against infringement claims, institutions of higher learning are hiring copyright specialists. This descriptive study focuses on identifying the characteristics and services of this pioneering branch of library work as it invents itself. Many practicalities inform the choice to create a copyright librarian position. Long-standing associations between librarianship and copyright also make this position a logical development. The article also examines what employers and librarians are doing to define this new role, suggests appropriate qualifications, and discusses ways in which a copyright librarian can integrate copyright reference responsibilities with other library work. There are also anecdotal insights on the experience of being a copyright librarian.
