The paper is a focus of case study methodology and a mini-study that shows the advantages and disadvantages of case study methodology. The mini-study of Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) implements case study components of observation, financial archival records, and informal discussions with FGCU personnel. A literature review is included to establish the background focus of finance and higher education. An interview tool is designed using the Heifetz organizational change model as a way to collect information pertinent to organizational change of FGCU from inception through the fall of 2001, which marks its year 5 existence. Observations took place October 25, 2001 and financial spreadsheets are obtained from contacts made during the observation. Analysis of the campus observations, financial information, and informal discussion using the Heifetz model highlight the growing pains of a new institution to a state system of higher education. The conclusion includes a contrast and comparison of the Heifetz model as applied to Portland State University and the application to FGCU.
