Printing and finishing play a key role in the garment industry, and flock printing is a new way to decorate fabrics and garments with rich colours, finish and special effects. Flock printed products can be washable, dry-cleanable, fire-retardant, water-repellent, stain-resistant and have good light fastness, depending on requirements specific to each application. Flocking is the application of fine fibres to adhesive coated surfaces—i.e. applying short finely cut natural or synthetic fibres, directly on to a substrate coated with an adhesive. This way, a wide range of textile surfaces from velvet-like soft to brush-like rough surfaces can be produced inexpensively. The diameter of the individual flock strand is only a few thousandth of a centimetre, and ranges in length from 0.25 mm to 5 mm. These short fibres are deposited on the adhesive coated surface either electronically or pneumatically.
