The aim of this paper is to present a methodology for theeffectiveness of alternative short tests that could be applied in aninspection and maintenance programme. The basis for the evalua- tion,apart from the environmental benefits, is the social and politicalacceptance that constitutes crucial parameters in the implementationof a short test. The methodology has been applied to a large sampleof three way catalyst equipped vehicles representative of theEuropean fleet and the effectiveness of 10 al- ternative short testsand been evaluated.
