Dynamic yarn tension measurement and control in direct cabling mechanisms. Wireless online yarn tension measurement has been established by means of semiconductor strain gauges based on Microelectromechanical Systems technology. Yarn tension control is of primary importance in most textile processes. Production problems will invariably exist without proper tension control. They can materialise in lower process speeds and quality problems, and often result in yarn breakage and production loss. Tension is generated wherever yarn is handled, through air resistance and through friction between the yarn and its guides. The problem with tension is the fluctuation of the tension level that exists in most processes. Tension variations can show up in the final product as streaks, colour changes and changes in yarn count and can reduce the performance of the final product, especially in technical fabrics. However the great majority of yarns in various processes, even today, is tensioned by archaic means, resulting in lost production and inferior quality.
