AbstractFomes annosusis the most important root pathogen in British forestry. In pine crops,F. annosusis often checked when stumps are naturally colonised byPeniophora gigantea. Experimental inoculation of stumps withP. giganteareduced infection byF. annosusin first rotation crops and was as effective as chemical stump treatments. In severely diseased pine crops,P. giganteainoculation reduced but did not eliminateF. annosus. P. giganteais produced commercially and is used in many pine forests in Britain.
