Franz Schubert's Serenade, written in the early 1800s, has always been a part of my life. My mother played it on the piano throughout my childhood, and years later, at my wedding, I walked down the aisle to its familiar melody. When articles about how to design cloth using music appeared in HAND-WOVEN (Sept./Oct. 2000), I decided to try to capture my appreciation for the Serenade in cloth. My biggest obstacle was that I knew nothing about musical notation.
