Previous analyses of the surfaces of machined components havefailed to identify a common textural form and consequently a completecharacterization of a significant group of such surfaces has not beenproduced. In this paper, the reason for this failure is shown to bethe current standard practice of confining analysis to the shorterwave- lengths of the texture. The new method is an analysis of notonly the shorter wavelengths, but also of the longer texturewavelengths.
