A bitch was presented because of anorexia, easy fatigability and loss of weight. Complementary examinations showed severe hypercalcaemia, and the diagnostic procedure arrived at primary hyperparathyroidism which was confirmed by parathormone dosage. An ultra-sound examination of the thyroid region showed a hypoechogenic lesion, and in the course of subsequent surgery ablation removed a parathyroid adenoma. Closely administered calcaemia dosages prevent hypocalcaemia, which is the major postoperative complication encountered. Recommendations are given regarding the following: the diagnostic procedures to be adopted in dealing with hypercalcaemia, and the management of both hyperparathyroidism and hypocalcaemia.
