Paddy cultivation in Kerala needs appropriate mechanization to cope with the increased cost of cultivation due to high wages and scarcity of labourers. Ploughing, puddling and spraying are almost done completely by machinery. Transplanting, harvesting and threshing machinery of various sizes, powered by tractors, tillers and diesel engines are being developed and field tested. The manual and self-propelled transplanters as well as tractor front-mounted reapers and flow through rasp bar typethreshers were found suitable for Kerala conditions.
