The sabbatical is an opportunity for both professional and personal growth. Fifteen subjects from nine different schools of nursing describe their sabbatical in terms of plan, purpose, satisfactions, dissatisfactions, problems encountered, surprises, and feelings about returning to work. The professional and personal benefits of the sabbatical are described. Practical guidelines are given to assist faculty who are planning a sabbatical. Implications for nursing education administrators are identified.
