In the final design of the 182.3 MW Salto Pilao scheme, now going ahead in Brazil, some changes were made to the hydraulic system, involving use of the access tunnel as a surge tank; this will allow for improved efficiency and economics, as well as reduced environmental impact (as an originally designed 40 m-high surge tank will no longer be necessary).
