AbstractVarious factors in the conversion of dilatometric data to the extent of polymerization have been considered. These factors are volume additivity, density additivity, difference between the thermal coefficients of monomer and polymer, molecular weight, and degree of crosslinkage. Equations relating the dilatometric readings to the extent of polymerization have been derived. These equations can be used for reactions where the polymerization may be stopped short of complete polymerization. They can also be used for polymerization where the initial portion of the reaction is difficult to record.
