In the real estate biz, they say the sale is all about location, location, location. For San Francisco Bay Area portrait photographer Thomas Broening, the selling point is lighting, lighting, lighting. Although Broening's M.O. has always been to have a strong point of view, and just as importantly, to be able to communicate that vision, his dramatic use of lighting has become much more than a means to an end. A veteran shooter for such clients as Campbell Ewald, Addison Design, Mering and Associates, Progrexion, ESPN Magazine, Fortune, and Time, Broening recalls vividly how the work of the newspaper photographer/mentor he had in high school set the stage for his future success. "What struck me most about this guy was that I could always tell which pictures were his even without looking at the photo credit." After covering the news for a San Francisco weekly for two years, Broening moved on to shooting portraits exclusively, eventually opening his own studio five years ago. Today, one can easily recognize a classic Broening image, without glancing at the photo credit. His mentor taught him well.
