The arable lands of the Shikoku District in Japan are located at various geographical and climatic conditions, i.e., flat land, hilly and mountainous areas, coastal regions and small islands. This condition has brought about the development of different types of agriculture based on specific locations. The average landhold-ing of farmers in Shikoku is rather limited compared with other districts of the country. As a result, the district is characterized by a highly intensive agriculture with a multiplicity of land use.
