While private sector dot-corns wrestle with the complex issue of online privacy, more than a few people in Washington are anxious to press ahead with government standards designed to preserve the confidentiality of personal information on the Web. One of the more active of these groups is the Federal Trade Commission-which apparently believes it has a clear mandate from the American public to do something about the "problem" of online privacy protection.
