Bench scale (jar test), pilot plant scale (0.016#x2002;ML/day capacity) and full treatment plant scale trials were used to optimize cold water chemical pretreatment processes. A number of metallic coagulants (aluminum sulphate, polyaluminum chloride, ferric sulphate) and several low to high molecular weight synthetic polymers were compared. The efficacy of each chemical pretreatment was assessed individually as well as in combination with other chemicals. Physical (turbidity, particle counting), chemical (pH, aluminum, saturation index) and bacteriological water quality indicators were used to evaluate the treatment processes.
