When is too much not enough? Too little just right? Commercial photographer Ken Pivak—once driven by a "more clutter the better" mindset, a vestige or his days as a young graffiti artist, growing up in the Bronx—has found that slashing the number of elements that comprise his advertising, fashion, and beauty images is the way to creative success. "My work started to get mistaken for illustrations, and it looked too expensive," says Pivak. "That, I learned, is the biggest problem with going the digital route." His current work, which centers on images inspired by beauty, nature, and artists such as Rene Magritte, still features many elements, but each is now chosen more carefully to evoke visual interest. "I like to keep the eye roving through a picture, so all my shots are set up that way," notes Pivak.
