A Drapemeter has been developed for the measurement of drape values by image processing. The results obtained are not significantly different from those obtained by the conventional method. The drape coefficient measured by pixel counting is closer to that of the conventional method, but the variation is higher than obtained by boundary approximation and Fourier Series. It does not require as much time and skill. It was found that, on repeated measurements, the variation was less than that of the conventional manual method. With the image analysis system, new measures of drape such as the drape distance ratio, number of nodes, fold depth index and amplitude to radius ratio, were defined. Repeated measurement has shown that drape shape is not constant, which causes the fabric to have different drape values. This instability of fabric drape makes it necessary to measure the drape values many times to allow drape values to be used as an objective index for drapeability. It is not easy to measure drape values many times with the conventional method, but the image analysis system makes it quite easy to take multiple measurements.
