Regional analgesia may contribute to reducing the intensity of pain associated with labour and delivery. Emphasis on reducing side effects of regional anaesthesia has resulted in new concepts of receptor-specific drug therapy that takes advantage of synergistic interactions of various pharmacologic compounds.
