Imports of textile machinery into the US increased by 11. to US$337.4m during the first four months of 2004. This gain suggests that imports are on target to surpass $lb for the first time in three years, and potentially some recovery in the textile machinery import market. Unfortunately such gains will probably be illusive. Partial quantity information does not support import growth. Further, the dollar depreciated by 10.7 against the currencies of nations supplying textile machinery to the US, effectively nullifying any real growth in the import market. Overall this suggests that US factories are replacing existing equipment as needed, but no real increase in demand will occur in the foreseeable future.
