This month The Science of Forming reaches a milestone-column number 100. Over the years (you can calculate how many) a smorgasbord of different topics has been presented. This wide range of topics has been intentional since the readers of MetalForming magazine are extremely diverse, encountering every imaginable forming challenge. Underlying all the columns, however, is a foundation of science upon which each column is constructed. This month's column examines several blocks of this scientific foundation. The laws of nature override everything humans think they know about sheetmetal forming. Humans think and brainstorm in terms of single variables. We even attempt to write equations to predict what will happen next. However, nature utilizes not only the 50 or more inputs to every forming system, but also incorporates the interactions among all of the variables and then sometimes even reacts with highly unexpected synergistic results.
