The high level of investments required for hydraulic works on the one hand and also the competition between various water uses even in a country with such important water resources as in France on the other hand are responsible for the fact that these structures are usually multi-purposely designed. However, hydroelectric power generation is no longer the driving force behind these realisations. The evolution in water needs, the necessity of an integrated approach for the management of both water resources and sites and the firm intentions of public authorities to take into account the requirements of the collectivity are the main motives that make possible in France the availability of the moneys necessary for the realisation of large projects without the inclusion of energetic considerations. While these hydro-electric considerations still exists they are more complementary since the introduction of other forms of energy less renewable but more economic.
