Sharon Leger Gottula's big break into food photography came courtesy of bok choy and smoothies. And food has never looked ordinary to her since. Living in Los Angeles, she was assisting every style of photographer she could find, when food stylist Kimberly Huson suggested she think about shooting food. She and Huson tested some shots, one of which was a bundle of bok choy against a bright purple background. Men's Fitness magazine's art director saw the shot, loved it, and hired Gottula to shoot smoothies. "I love food photography for a lot of reasons. I find it much more exciting than product photography. I love working with a team and collaborating with stylists. I love food and what it represents. It's more than just a product; food embodies love, family, history, culture, and travel," she said.
