Activities of acid phosphatase and β-glucuronidase in the cerebella of young jaundiced (j/j) and non-jaundiced (j/+; control) Gunn rats were studied with the enzyme histochemical method. The cerebellum ofj/+ rats showed high acid phosphatase activities in Purkinje cells and neurons in the cerebellar nuclei. Inj/jrats, a number of neurons were lost and numerous microglialike cells with a high acid phosphatase activity appeared in the hypoplastic cerebellum. Although β-glucuronidase activity was rarely detected in the control cerebellum, a high enzyme activity was observed associated with microglialike cells inj/jrats. The present results provide a cytological basis for the reported differential increase in the activities of these lysosomal enzymes in thej/jrat cerebellu
