The history of the development of numerical weather prediction is presented briefly. The present state of the discipline is discussed both in terms of the type of models being used and in terms of the quality of the forecasts being produced operationally. It is shown that the goal of approaching the theoretical limit of predictability in medium#x2010;range prediction is far from being reached and that climate modelling is still in its infancy.
