Starting in early March 2004, I began a solo, unsupported expedition to the geographic North Pole. My goal was to start from land (Russia) and walk, ski, and swim (yes swim!) some 700 miles to reach the top of the world. For nearly two months, I battled my way, in average -30F temperatures, I encountered polar bears (the only mammal to actively hunt humans), swam for three hours in -28F Arctic waters, and continued for another 140 miles after breaking my ankle, until I reached my goal.
