My eleven-day trip started with an eight-hour flight to Honolulu, Hawaii After that, and for the next ten days, I would fly back and forth between Osaka, Japan (IATA: KIX/ICAO: RJBB) and Honolulu (HNL/ PHNL). It may sound ugly, transiting the dateline six times, but I would end up with three Honolulu layovers. What's not to like about that? On the first leg, I was sitting in the left seat minding my own business when our purser called. We were exactly ten minutes from our point of no return (almost halfway between the mainland and Hawai'i) when she informed us they were experiencing a low airflow problem in the lower-deck crew rest area. The co-pilot in the right seat, who had literally just finished training, asked her to elaborate. "Well," she said, "you know that red light that comes on when you have low airflow downstairs? It's on."
