In recent years, the natural gas industry - interested in using its plastic piping infrastructure to maximum capabilities - has supported various regulatory initiatives to allow for the use of higher pressures to increase flow capacity and delivery efficiencies. As of June 2004, the Department of Transportation Pipeline Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (DOT-PHMSA) adopted several changes to the Code of Federal Regulations that govern the safe use of plastic piping systems, including an amendment to Title 49, Part 192.123, to increase the maximum allowable design pressure for plastic piping systems from 100 psig to 125 psig.
