The use of population#x2010;weighted heating degree#x2010;days provides a more realistic estimate of the potential fuel demand for residential heating on a regional, provincial or national basis than the use of unweighted, site#x2010;specific heating degree#x2010;day values. A population#x2010;weighted heating degree#x2010;day programme is already in existence in the United States. The present study has prepared the basic data required to develop a similar programme for Canada using the 1976 Canadian census statistics and the heating degree#x2010;day values for approximately 100 synoptic weather stations across the country.
