The thermal diffusivity of atactic amorphous polystyrene, from which polystyrene-water calorimeter detectors are made, was measured. Using the value of the thermal diffusivity so determined, an estimate was made of the amount of thermal diffusion from the 2.5 cm thick detector to the surrounding water during beam irradiation. The thermal diffusion was calculated as a function of different combinations of the following parameters: (i) the thermal diffusivity; (ii) the size of the detector; (iii) the absorbed dose rate; and (iv) the duration of irradiation. Results indicate that all these parameters must be carefully examined, or else the polystyrene-water calorimeter may underestimate the adsorbed dose by an appreciable amount because of thermal diffusion.
