Railway Technical Research Institute (RTRI) and Hitachi Automotive Systems, Ltd. have newly developed an up and down control system for an air spring vehicle. There is a proven same system for the coil spring, but there is no precedent for air spring in the world. This system was introduced into the cruise train, "SEVEN STARS IN KYUSHU' of JR Kyushu, which started in operation in October 2013, and is quite useful in vibration suppression. In the system, vertical motion damper with variable damping function is installed on two places each truck in parallel with the secondary spring (air spring) supporting a vehicle body. And expansion of the damper is controlled in accordance with the magnitude of the shaking detected by the acceleration sensors provided in the diamond-shaped, at a total of four locations of the front and rear centers and right and left of under-floor center, thus vibration are reduced.
