The value of US apparel imports totalled US$66,869 million for 2004, breaking the previous record high of $62,911 million a year earlier. The 6.3 increase reflects the increased strength of low cost producers, such as China, which gained market share and whose currencies remained stable against the dollar. Import quantity overall was up by 8.7, but China alone saw its quantity shipped climb by 26.4, strongly contributing to a lower increase in value of overall apparel imports.
