The MRT "Purple Line" in Bangkok, Thailand opened on August 6 between Tao Poon and Khlong Bang Phai (23 km). East Japan Railway Company (JR East) participated in overseas railway projects for the first time. Japan Transport Engineering Company (J-TREC), a subsidiary of JR East, provided newly manufactured railcars. JR East, Marubeni and Toshiba jointly provided maintenance service for railcars and ground equipment. This is the first time for Japanese rolling stock to be introduced into urban transportation in Bangkok, and it is the first time for a Japanese team that includes a railway company to participate in a railway maintenance project overseas.
