Co_3O_4 was prepared in aqueous solutionsthrough a staged oxidation process. When the mole ratio ofstarting chemicals Co~(2+):OH~- is 1:2 (OH~- as alimiting reagent), the reaction path changes to the brucite-like tohydrotalcite-like phase, and then to the spinel. Using the presentmethod, Co_3O_4 can be formed at a temperature as low as 40deg C, and single-phase spinel Co_3O_4 can be prepared at 50deg C within hours under normal atmospheric pressure.
