In May 2008, the U.S. Department of Agriculture(USDA) published a draft environmental impactstatement for the use of genetically engineeredfruit flies and pink bollworms in plant pest controlprograms. According to the statement, thetransgenic insects "carry a heritable sterility generesulting in only male and no female offspring inthe field." As a result, the statement concluded, "The wildpopulation would soon collapse because of the eliminationof female flies:'
