A recent spat between Eastern and Western car makers has highlighted allegations that Chinese firms are 'copying European designs. But, asks Matthew Sparkes, is there fault on both sides? BMW RECENTLY threatened legal action against a Chinese car maker in an attempt to stop it selling a model which, some people claim, copies the design of one of the German auto giant's marques. BMW claimed that Shuanghuan Automobile's CEO model infringes the design copyright of its X5 model, and therefore wants to stop the CEO from being sold in Europe. Similar concerns have also been raised by other car manufacturers, but the legal complexities are making it difficult to determine who, if anyone, is in the wrong.
