At a regular briefing on 8 October 2013, Mr. Tetsuro TOMITA, president of JR East has announced that they will introduce radio train control system "ATACS (Advanced Train Administration and Communications System)', as a part of the transformation of metropolitan transportation system, in the Saikyo line between Ikebukuro and Omiya (23.5 km) in the fall of 2017. The introduction of ATACS is 2nd section following the Senseki line between Aobadori and Shiogama(17.2 km) in October 2011. Instead of the traditional train control system of ground equipment, trains themselves detect the position, and control using train radio. Since track circuits and ground signals are not required, the improvement of the streamlining and safety/reliability of many of equipment and the reduction of maintenance costs can be realized.
