Airport planners and consultants are warning that today's air traffic delays will worsen in the coming decade as strong air transport growth continues to outpace runway-building projects in much of the world. Without new runways, domestic air traffic congestion is predicted to intensify despite the promise of $10 billion in federal funds for airport infrastructure projects in the next three years and the potential for billions more in newly hiked passenger facilities charges. In Europe, sustainable growth initiatives and efforts by environmentalists to keep airports from expanding could similarly handicap air commerce.
