Immuno-enzyme histochemical investigations on the bovine hypothalamus showed that the bovine neurophysins I and II are synthetized in separate neurons. The neurophysin I neurons and the neurophysin II neurons are both present as well in the supraoptic nuclei as in the paraventricular nuclei. In the supraoptic nuclei, the neurophysin II neurons predominate in number; in the paraventricular nuclei, the neurophysin I neurons predominate. The two kinds of neurons are partly localized in separate areas. Moreover, the neurophysin I neurons and the neurophysin II neurons show distinct morphological differences. These observations strongly support the hypothesis that also oxytocin and vasopressin are made in separate neurons.
