The Dcxtrostix/Reflcctance Meier System for measuring blood glucose concentration was studied. The critical step in the procedure was the length of time that the blood remained in contact with the paper-bound enzyme. Heparinizcd blood can be used and precision is only slightly increased by using duplicate determinations or by calibrating the instrument with more than one standard stix. There was little advantage in screening all prenatal patients for a blood as opposed to a urine glucose test but in all women with glucosuria blood glucose should be determined immediately to detect overt diabetes mellitus. The study system proved valuable in providing the clinician with a rapid and precise method for determining blood glucose concentrations in women with pregnancy glucosuria and with diabetes mellitus. This new system complements rather than replaces the urine glucose testing procedures.
