Effects of humid aerosols and fog on optical wave propagation at 1.064 μm over various horizontal atmospheric communication links are investigated both experimentally and theoretically by use of theoretical and empirical models as best fits of experimental data. Mie scattering is used to describe the attenuation of optical waves by aerosols for lower elevation horizontal atmospheric links. The geometrical optics approximation is used to obtain the extinction coefficient for optical waves at 1.064 μm passing through clouds, fog, water droplets, and atmospheric particles with dimensions larger than the wavelength. Good agreement between a new model of propagation effects through such particles, and measurements carried out at two different sites in southern and northen Israel, is obtained.
