In Japan, there are various types of railway transport systems. They are mainly sorted by the characteristic of the transport system such as management scale, historical carrier, technologies used and so on. In this paper, we sort them into four network groups used in the book, "Railway facts and figures" published by Institution for Transport Policy Studies and supervised by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism. They, as shown below, are networks of JR conventional lines, networks of private railway lines, networks of Shinkansen lines and urban traffic networks.
